There are over 67,000 Homeless School-Age Children in Los Angeles County, as well as thousands under 5 years old.  Most of these children are couch surfing among different relatives’ homes.  These children suffer higher rates of chronic and acute illnesses, more trauma, more social emotional difficulties, and more learning difficulties than other children living below the poverty line.  The County has set up the Homeless Family Solutions System to assess, screen, and find homes for families facing homelessness, providing them with the resources to move into and stay in homes they can afford but many affordable developers and others are unaware of the support this Solutions System provides.  And, of course, more needs to be done.

Melissa Schoonmaker, Homeless Education Consultant with the Los Angeles County of Education, will open the webinar with a profile of Los Angeles County’s uncounted homeless children. She will touch on the developmental and scholastic impacts of transient homelessness on infants and toddlers.

Kris Freed, Associate Vice President of Programs with LA Family Housing, will explain the operations and successes of the Homeless Family Solutions System, how affordable developers can utilize the system, as well as what more is needed to provide decent, stable homes where children will thrive.

This will be followed by Q & A.
